Tea exports from the Mechi Customs Office increased by an astonishing 69.22% in the first quarter of this fiscal year. It has provided a huge boost to Nepal’s tea sector. Between Saun and Kartik (July to November), 8,062 metric tons of tea were sent overseas.

Kandel, Information Officer at the Mechi Customs Office, stated that the value of tea exports has increased by 67.87%, totaling Rs 2.2 billion. This is a significant increase above the Rs 1.31 billion recorded during the same time last year.
While tea exports increased dramatically, other goods encountered obstacles. Black cardamom exports dropped by 11.87%, chhurpi by 41.45%, and vegetables such as cauliflower, cabbage, and broccoli each fell by 27.98%. However, plywood exports were a bright light with a 29.63% gain.
The customs office also recorded Rs 4.72 billion in revenue collection during this period, meeting 27.22% of its yearly income objective. The increase in tea exports highlights Nepal’s agricultural products ability to fuel economic growth, even as other sectors face challenges.
