Marsyangdi Hydropower Runs at Full Capacity This Winter

The Marsyangdi Hydropower Station, located in Tanahun’s Aanbookhaireni Rural Municipality-4, is functioning at full capacity during the winter. Typically, a season of lower energy production, the facility is producing 69 megawatts of power due to unexpected rains in September and October.

Chief Engineer Pashupati Gautam stated that the unseasonal rains had greatly boosted water flow in the Marsyangdi River, allowing all three plant units to generate 23 megawatts apiece. This consistent water supply is projected to keep the plant operating at full capacity for at least another month.

Compared to last year, when poor snowmelt and constrained water flow cut output to 30 MW. This year’s excellent conditions demonstrate the influence of weather patterns on hydropower generation. Gautam observed that during the summer, melting snow and increased rains often raise water levels, increasing electricity output.

The Marsyangdi Hydropower Station generates electricity that is sent into the national grid through the Bharatpur substation in Chitwan. It demonstrates its critical position in Nepal’s energy supply. The station’s capacity to adjust to shifting water levels assures constant electricity output all year.
