K P Sharma Oli, is on an official visit to China from December 2 to 5, 2024. This significant diplomatic engagement highlights the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between the two nations, built on a foundation of mutual respect and shared aspirations.
During the visit, Prime Minister Oli held high-level meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Qiang, and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Zhao Leji. These discussions addressed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and tackle global and regional challenges collaboratively.
Celebrating 70 Years of Diplomatic Relations
As Nepal and China approach the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025, both sides pledged to commemorate this milestone with meaningful initiatives. Discussions focused on implementing agreements previously signed, enhancing connectivity, and fostering closer collaboration in trade, infrastructure, and people-to-people exchanges.
The historical foundation of China-Nepal relations, established in 1955, has been consistently strengthened through high-level visits, including President Xi Jinping’s historic state visit to Nepal in 2019. This visit elevated the relationship to a “Strategic Partnership of Cooperation Featuring Everlasting Friendship for Development and Prosperity.”
Commitments and Agreements Reached
Key agreements and commitments include:
1. Infrastructure and Connectivity Development
- Belt and Road Initiative (BRI): Both sides expressed readiness to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for building the Trans-Himalayan Multi-Dimensional Connectivity Network, further advancing Belt and Road cooperation.
- Road and Tunnel Projects: Agreements to accelerate the Kathmandu Ring Road Improvement Project and feasibility studies for the Tokha-Chhahare Tunnel.
2. Trade and Economic Cooperation
- Nepal welcomed China’s decision to give zero-tariff treatment on 100% of tariff lines for Nepali products.
- Discussions were held on expanding trade, particularly in agriculture, with Nepal exporting haylage, medicinal plants, and tea to China.
3. Energy Collaboration
- Agreements to expedite feasibility studies for the Jilong/Keyrung-Rasuwagadhi-Chilime 220kV Cross-Border Power Transmission Line and enhance cooperation in new energy and telecommunication infrastructure.
4. Cross-Border Railway
- Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to the feasibility study of the Jilong/Keyrung-Kathmandu Cross-Border Railway, aiming to strengthen connectivity and bolster economic ties.
People-to-People Exchanges and Tourism
The two nations emphasized promoting tourism and cultural exchanges as Nepal prepares for Visit Nepal 2025. Agreements were reached to encourage Chinese tourists to visit iconic Nepali destinations like Lumbini and Pokhara, supported by direct air routes between Nepali and Chinese cities.
Cultural initiatives include hosting a Chinese Film Festival in Nepal and collaborative celebrations such as the Pokhara International Mountain Cross Country Competition and the Lumbini International Peace Festival.
Strengthening Cooperation in Health and Disaster Management
The Chinese government committed to furthering health initiatives in Nepal, including the establishment of a CAR-T cell laboratory for cancer treatment and expansion of the China-Nepal Traditional Medicine Cooperation.
In disaster management, China agreed to enhance technical assistance to Nepal’s National Emergency Operation Center and accelerate post-earthquake reconstruction projects.
A Vision for a Shared Future
China reaffirmed its unwavering support for Nepal’s sovereignty, independence, and development, while Nepal reiterated its commitment to the One-China Policy and respect for China’s territorial integrity. The two nations aim to enhance bilateral cooperation under the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and President Xi Jinping’s vision of a “Community with a Shared Future for Mankind.”
