This cultural tradition was born in 1816 when the Purne Danda emerged as a regional administrative place after the Sugauli Treaty. During that time, the Rai community’s Sakela dance and the Limbu community’s Dan Nach were performed to entertain the locals and visitors. The special way of courtship through dance added value, usually leading to marriage!
This fair has revived in recent years through the activities of the Jhyamte Fair Organizing Committee. Chairperson Aser Rai shares that the event has added more flavor with local food stalls and lively music performances, attracting many Nepalese and Indian visitors.
The Karphok Khalanga Community Homestay has also boosted tourism in the area, allowing visitors to enjoy both the fair and the serene beauty of Purne Danda. Whether it’s for the cultural performances or the mouthwatering local cuisine, Jhyamte Mela is a must-visit event celebrating Ilam’s cultural heritage and natural charm.
