The Department of Immigration has introduced a new online system for issuing route permits to tourists visiting restricted zones, both domestic and foreign.
Previously, tourists had to physically obtain permits after completing paperwork. However, starting last week, route permits can now be obtained electronically.
Visitors can now more easily access prohibited places including the Taplejung Kanchenjunga region, Simkot, Changkheli, and Namkha in the Humla district, and the upper Mustang, upper Dolpa, Tsum, and Nuvri Valley in the Manaslu region of Gorkha.
The Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) general secretary, Binod Sapkota, said that more tourists will be able to visit Nepal’s trekking sites thanks to the online permits.
The president of TAAN, Neelhari Bastola, expressed hope that the internet service will boost the trekking sector by drawing in more visitors.
Acting Director General of the Department of Immigration, Krishna Bahadur Katwal, explained that tourists can now easily obtain permits online by making payments via QR codes through trekking companies or personal accounts.
